International Sunday School Lesson November 27 2022 Fall #13
Ephesians 6:10-18 ESV Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. (11) Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. (12) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. (13) Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. (14) Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, (15) and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. (16) In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; (17) and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, (18) praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
Ephesians 6:10-18 ESV
Notes
Background
McGee Many years ago Billy Sunday, the evangelist, attracted a great deal of attention by saying that up on the speaker’s platform he was fighting the devil. I think that there was a great element of truth in that, because it was a spiritual battle. The battle is carried on wherever the Word of God is preached and the gospel is given out. That’s the battle line today. That is where the enemy is working. The enemy is not working down on skid row or partying it up on Saturday night.
Romans 13:12 (ESV)The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
The Whole Armor — Ephesians 6:10-11
JFB The panoply offensive and defensive. An image readily suggested by the Roman armory, Paul being now in Rome.
2 Corinthians 11:14 (ESV)And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
Spiritual Forces of Evil — Ephesians 6:12
Job 1:6-7 (ESV)Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7The LORD said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.”
Able to Withstand — Ephesians 6:13

Belt of Truth — Ephesians 6:14
Paul talking about his actions 2 Corinthians 6:7 (ESV) by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left;

Gospel of Peace — Ephesians 6:15

Shield of Faith — Ephesians 6:16
1 Peter 5:8-9 (ESV) Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. [9] Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
Sword of the Spirit — Ephesians 6:17
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV) For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Pulpit The glorious truth that we are saved (comp. Eph 2:5, Eph 2:8) appropriated, rested on, rejoiced in, will protect even so vital a part as the head, will keep us from intellectual surrender and rationalistic doubt.
Praying at All Times — Ephesians 6:18
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV) Rejoice always, [17] pray without ceasing, [18] give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
